Kohima: A backyard poultry project in Zunheboto has generated over Rs 30.8 lakh for 60 women. They belong to five self-help groups in the Akuluto block. The initiative spans the villages of Sumisettsu, Zaphumi, Lumami, Alaphumi, and Shichimi. It is a win for local production.

Nagaland University led the effort through the Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Zunheboto. Financial support arrived from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. The state currently faces a deficit of 1,520 lakh eggs and nearly 38.5 metric tonnes of meat every year. This project aims to fix that.

Participants received Rainbow Rooster chicks, starter feed, medicine, and vaccination support. They also learned scientific management and used low-cost egg incubators. Data shows households consumed 1,380 birds and sold 2,135 more. They produced 22,618 eggs in total. Each woman earned an average of roughly Rs 32,600.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, the project head, noted that the incubators build a local supply chain. It cuts reliance on outsiders. “The success of this NABARD-assisted backyard poultry initiative demonstrates how research can be translated into practical solutions that enhance livelihoods, improve nutritional security and promote sustainable rural development,” said Vice Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik.

The findings appear in the International Journal of Agriculture Extension and Social Development. University officials expect incomes to climb as birds hit full capacity. They hope to replicate the model across other remote parts of Nagaland.
