Meghalaya Leaders Defend Tourism Amid Online Hate Campaign

Shillong: Former Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh blamed neighboring states for a toxic hate campaign against Meghalaya. He believes rivals feel insecure because they cannot compete with the state’s natural beauty. Lyngdoh condemned the online movement as a calculated attempt to damage the region. He claimed the smear campaign is simply an reaction to Meghalaya status as the country’s top destination. Digital platforms currently host hashtags like #BoycottMeghalaya.

Tourist numbers remain low. The decline follows violence during a Khasi Students Union bike rally on August 19. It has been ten days since the unrest. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong insists the state is safe for travel. “We welcome all tourists and tourists who intend to come should feel free as we have put up all safety mechanisms,” Tynsong said. The Home Department has ordered local administrations to remain on high alert.

Police in Guwahati registered FIRs against KSU members following the unrest. Tynsong stated that the law will run its course regarding these multiple complaints. Lyngdoh proposed a new communication bridge between the government and NGOs. He wants stakeholders to consider the long-term impact of their actions. Future protests should not inconvenience residents or visitors.
