Kohima: A poultry farming project in Zunheboto has generated more than Rs 30.8 lakh for 60 women across five self-help groups. The initiative, led by Nagaland University and the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) with funding from NABARD, targeted households in Sumisettsu, Zaphumi, Lumami, Alaphumi, and Shichimi villages.

The project aimed to tackle Nagaland's massive supply gap of 1,520 lakh eggs and 38.5 metric tonnes of meat annually. Participants in the Akuluto block received training in scientific management, Rainbow Rooster chicks, starter feed, and medical support. They also received low-cost egg incubators to ensure year-round production.

The results were immediate. Participating households consumed 1,380 birds and sold 2,135 more. They produced 22,618 eggs. Each woman earned an average net income of Rs 32,592. The findings were documented in the International Journal of Agriculture Extension and Social Development.

Dr. Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, lead scientist at KVK Zunheboto, explained that the incubators established a reliable, local chick supply. This lowers costs and reduces the need for outside help. Vice Chancellor Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik praised the outcome. He stated, "The success of this NABARD-assisted backyard poultry initiative demonstrates how research can be translated into practical solutions that enhance livelihoods, improve nutritional security and promote sustainable rural development."

University officials expect individual earnings to climb as the bird population matures. They plan to use this model in other remote districts.
