Kohima: Search crews ended their hunt for two missing people on July 24 after six days of digging through debris at Defence Colony, Mon. Eight people died in the July 19 landslide, but rescuers could not recover the final two bodies. They called off the operation after the prolonged effort failed to turn them up.
The community held a mass funeral for the two missing victims on July 25 at Thamnan Ward in Mon Town. Attendees included advisor Wangpang Konyak, Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak, and Superintendent of Police Kanchan Kumar Kandpal. Representatives from the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong stood with family members and local villagers to mark the loss.
Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak spoke for the district administration during the service. He noted the hard work of the recovery teams and thanked those who helped the families. He specifically credited the nine elected members of the district and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak for their financial and moral support during the crisis. The DC said, "He expressed gratitude to the nine elected members of Mon district and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak for their financial and moral support."
Local NGOs, government officials, and volunteers also received recognition for their cooperation during the week-long search. Speakers from the Konyak Union, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong, Konyak Students’ Union, and Thamnan Ward shared brief remarks before the mourners.
