Kohima: A deluge of rain has crippled Nagaland, leaving nine dead and four people missing. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority reported the fatalities, with all deaths concentrated in Mon district. Five of those victims perished when a landslide hammered Mon town at 6:30 am on Sunday.
Search and rescue crews are scouring the debris. Their work continues despite relentless downpours. Personnel from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, State Disaster Response Force, Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles, and district administration are on the ground. They are operating in Mon town, Tizit, and Naginimora.
The disaster has hit 10 districts hard. Over 7,460 people are affected. Shamator district is currently the worst site, with nearly 7,000 residents caught in the path of destruction. Initial reports show 64 houses damaged across 93 villages. The floods also claimed the lives of 80 head of livestock, including cattle, pigs, and mithuns. Roads and critical infrastructure are in shambles.
Nagaland Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer expressed deep sorrow over the disaster. He stated he was "deeply saddened and profoundly distressed" by the tragedy. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced an ex gratia payment of Rs. 4 lakh for the families of the deceased. Injured victims will receive Rs. 74,000.
The Eastern Naga Students’ Federation and the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) are demanding faster relief. They want immediate restoration of power, telecommunications, and road links. The LJP also called on the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority to provide technical and financial support. Officials continue to monitor the situation. They warned the public to stay clear of riverbanks and landslide-prone slopes.
