Kohima: Residents gathered at Konyak Baptist Church in Mon on Sunday to remember the lives lost in the July 19 landslide at Defence Colony. The Konyak Baptist Church Mon organized the prayer and candlelight service. It drew public leaders and residents to mourn the tragedy.
Two bodies remain missing. Rescue crews searched for six days using heavy machinery. Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak praised the 42 Assam Rifles, Nagaland Police, the State Disaster Response Force, NGOs, and local volunteers for their tireless efforts. The deputy commissioner asked the public to stay united as they work to rebuild damaged areas of the town.
He thanked Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and the nine elected representatives from Mon district for their assistance. Yinai, the husband of the late Pomei, shared his story at the podium. Hetwang, another survivor, also spoke. Minister C L John and his wife attended the service alongside leaders from the Konyak Union, Konyak Students Union, and the Eastern Naga Students Federation.
The service ended with a message of hope. Rev. H. Moba Konyak led the candle-lighting ceremony. During his address, the deputy commissioner urged the community to prioritize empathy while preparing for future crises, stating: "Keep humanity first, remain united and be prepared to face future eventualities."
