Kohima: A massive landslide tore through a residential area below the Assam Rifles camp in Mon, Nagaland, at approximately 6:30 am on Sunday. Eight people are confirmed dead. Twelve others sustained injuries in the disaster. Rescue crews continue to dig through mud and debris to find those still missing.
Personnel from the Nagaland Police, Assam Rifles, Territorial Army, State Disaster Response Force, and District Disaster Management Authority are leading the recovery. Local volunteers from the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union, and Konyak Women Organisation joined the effort. Rain and unstable terrain slowed the work. Persistent water flow hampered equipment movement.
"Deeply distressing reports of heavy landslides in Mon. My heartfelt condolences to those who’ve lost loved ones. The State Govt. is closely monitoring the situation. NSDMA, Dist. Admin, DDMA, SDRF, Police, AR & local community are working on ground for search & rescue operations," Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio posted to X.
The government announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person. Injured victims will receive Rs 74,000 each. Affected families will get food, temporary shelter, and essential supplies.
The storm wreaked havoc beyond Mon. In Naganimora, four people are feared missing after being swept away by flash floods. Mokokchung’s Tuli subdivision saw severe flooding. Two schools are serving as relief shelters. PWD officials reported landslides at 20 to 25 locations in Mokokchung, including four major slides on the Mokokchung-Tuli road. Shamator district also faced road blockages on the Shamator-Tuensang National Highway and the Shamator NAP Ward-Kiphire road. In Wokha, mudslides hit the Doyang-Merapani road and damaged a house in Lakhuti Village.
Governor Nand Kishore Yadav and Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton expressed grief. Officials urged the public to avoid hillsides and riverbanks. Residents should monitor updates from the NSDMA. Do not spread rumors.
