Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio announced immediate relief measures following a deadly landslide in Mon town on July 19. The disaster struck at approximately 6:30 am, destroying homes and infrastructure. The government committed Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each deceased victim and Rs 74,000 for each injured person. Rio also provided Rs 10 lakh to the Konyak Union for emergency relief during a site visit to the Defence Colony in Walo Ward on July 20.
Mon town remains isolated. Road blockades have severed connections to Tizit, Naganimora, Sonari, Wakching, and Aboi. Teams from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, District Disaster Management Authorities, State Disaster Response Force, District Emergency Force, Nagaland Police, and Assam Rifles are leading search and rescue operations. Local volunteers and civil society groups are assisting in the effort.
Addressing the damage, the Chief Minister noted the incident was "uncertain and unfortunate." He linked the disaster to climate change and warned against ignoring building regulations in vulnerable areas. The state government is supplying food, temporary shelter, and medicine to displaced households while working to restore electricity and telecommunications.
Legislative Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, the Eastern Naga Students' Federation, and the Lok Janshakti Party have demanded faster rehabilitation. They called for transparent aid distribution and long-term infrastructure repair. The Lok Janshakti Party urged the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Disaster Management Authority to provide additional technical and financial support to the state. Officials continue to warn residents to avoid landslide-prone slopes and riverbanks.
