Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio visited the landslide site at Defence Colony, Walo Ward, in Mon Town on July 20 to assess the damage. A deadly landslide struck the area on July 19 around 6:30 am. It leveled homes and destroyed infrastructure. The Chief Minister described the incident as "uncertain and unfortunate."
Rio announced an ex gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh for the families of each victim. Injured residents will receive Rs 74,000 each. Beyond these individual payments, the Chief Minister handed Rs 10 lakh to the Konyak Union for immediate emergency use. The state government also pledged food, temporary housing, and supplies for those displaced.
Mon remains cut off from the rest of the state. Roads to Tizit, Naganimora, Sonari, Wakching, and Aboi are blocked. Aside from Mon, the Tuli subdivision in Mokokchung district reported severe flooding and road damage. Rescue teams from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority, the State Disaster Response Force, Nagaland Police, and Assam Rifles are clearing debris. They are evacuating vulnerable residents now.
Rio linked the disaster to climate change. He demanded stricter adherence to building codes in unstable zones. Officials directed all departments to stay on high alert to restore services. The government warned citizens to avoid riverbanks and slopes. Residents should follow official advisories and ignore rumors while crews work to clear lifelines.
