Kohima: Mon residents gathered at the Konyak Baptist Church on Sunday to mourn the eight lives lost in the July 19 landslide at Defence Colony. The Konyak Baptist Church Mon organized a prayer and candlelight service to honor the dead. Two bodies remain missing after six days of searching. Government agencies and volunteers continue to work with local machinery to locate them.
Deputy Commissioner Wennyei Konyak attended the event alongside Minister C L John and his wife. The Deputy Commissioner urged citizens to rebuild the damaged sections of Mon town. He also commended the 42 Assam Rifles, Nagaland Police, State Disaster Response Force, and various volunteers for their rescue efforts. "He urged them to remain strong and seek God's strength and comfort," the Deputy Commissioner stated during his address.
Survivors shared personal accounts during the service. Yinai, the husband of the late Pomei, and Hetwang, the sole survivor of his family, offered testimonies. Konyak Union president Yamao Konyak, Konyak Students' Union president Temwang Konyak, and the president of the Eastern Naga Students' Federation also spoke. Rev. H. Moba Konyak led the final message of hope and candle lighting.
On Tuesday, the district administration handed out ex gratia payments to the families of the eight victims. Each family received 4 lakh rupees under State Disaster Response Fund norms. The landslide victims were identified as Thenkhao Konyak, Tingyuh Konyak, Taotun Konyak, Toithron Konyak, Kenlong Konyak, Lunglei L Konyak, Pangho Konyak, and Pomei Konyak. Officials from the District Disaster Management Authority, along with leaders from the Konyak Union and Konyak Students' Union, oversaw the distribution.
