Aizawl: Mizoram officials will draft state-specific laws to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse. Chief Minister Lalduhoma led the State Core Committee meeting in Aizawl on Tuesday alongside Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar. A new panel will examine current rules and suggest updates to meet local needs. The state also plans to simplify witness expense payments by removing them from the IFMIS system.
Officials want anti-drug committees in every village. Data shows police handled 319 drug cases in 2025 with 483 arrests. The first six months of 2026 brought 219 cases and 312 arrests. Police blame smaller, more frequent smuggling runs for the jump. Improved equipment helps them catch more dealers.
Operation Jericho reduced illicit drug supply and hiked street prices. Authorities noted a drop in abused cough syrup, though cannabis remains a worry. Lalduhoma praised the work of police and civil groups. He said, "While the drug problem could not be eliminated overnight, sustained efforts had begun to produce visible results."
Detox efforts show progress too. The Hulhhliap Short Stay Centre near Aizawl helped 30 per cent of patients beat addiction since June 2025. The Social Welfare Department trained 198 people in new skills. Meanwhile, the Central Young Mizo Association is expanding rehab spots at the Tawngtaina Bethel Camping Centre.
