Imphal: Manipur recorded just five cybercrime cases in 2024, according to the latest Crime in India report from the National Crime Records Bureau. Numbers plummeted from 79 in 2020 to 67 in 2021, 18 in 2022, and three in 2023. These figures rank Manipur last among the eight northeastern states.
Assam leads that regional list with 408 cases. Other states include Meghalaya at 97, Arunachal Pradesh at 78, Mizoram at 50, Tripura at 33, Sikkim at 15, and Nagaland at 14. Nationally, the situation is grim. Cases spiked to 1,01,928 in 2024 from 86,420 the previous year. Telangana leads the country with 27,230 cases, trailed by Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Online fraud dominated the national data with 29,758 cases, followed by 36,920 computer-related offences and 19,296 cheating incidents. The Ministry of Home Affairs remains focused on state enforcement backed by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre and the 1930 fraud helpline. Officials confirmed that as of June 30, 2026, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System stopped financial crimes worth over Rs. 11,158 crore.
Despite the low count in Manipur, experts urge caution. They argue that low registration does not prove low prevalence. Analysts say the state needs "greater public awareness, prompt reporting and stronger cybercrime investigation mechanisms" to stay ahead of the digital threat.
