Kohima: Nagaland recorded 14 cyber crime cases in 2024. That is a sharp jump from the two cases logged in 2023. Data released by the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Lok Sabha on July 21 confirms this five-year high for the state. Still, the count remains among the lowest in India.
Regional numbers tell a different story. The eight states in the North-East recorded 700 cases in 2024, down from 1,081 the previous year. That is a 35 percent drop. Assam holds the highest regional share with 408 cases, followed by Meghalaya at 97 and Arunachal Pradesh at 78. Mizoram logged 50, Tripura 33, Sikkim 15, and Manipur five.
Nationwide, the situation is grim. Cyber crime cases rose nearly 18 percent, climbing from 86,420 in 2023 to 1,01,928 in 2024. Fraud accounts for the biggest numerical spike. Cheating and computer-related offences also surged. The Ministry noted that "investigation, registration of FIRs and subsequent action on cyber crime complaints are handled by the respective State and Union Territory law enforcement agencies."
Reporting portals paint a massive picture of financial loss. Between 2021 and 2025, citizens filed over 65.89 lakh fraud complaints on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Those reports involve more than Rs 55,050 crore. Authorities marked over Rs 8,189 crore as lien and registered 1.95 lakh FIRs. As of June 30, 2026, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System helped save over Rs 11,158 crore.
