Kohima: Nagaland recorded 14 cyber crime cases in 2024. That is a sharp rise from just two in 2023. While this marks the highest figure for the state in five years, the total remains among the lowest in India. Authorities recorded eight cases in 2020 and 2021, four in 2022, and two in 2023.
The Ministry of Home Affairs shared this National Crime Records Bureau data in the Lok Sabha on July 21. Specifics of the 14 cases in Nagaland show 10 involved computer-related offences. These included six cases of "cheating by personation" alongside two cases of identity theft and two of privacy violation. Authorities also logged two cases for transmitting sexually explicit material, one for tampering with source documents, and one for abetment.
Regional trends tell a different story. The eight North-Eastern states saw a combined decline of roughly 35 percent, dropping from 1,081 cases in 2023 to 700 in 2024. Assam led the region with 408 cases, followed by Meghalaya with 97, Arunachal Pradesh with 78, Mizoram with 50, Tripura with 33, Sikkim with 15, Nagaland with 14, and Manipur with five.
Some areas saw growth. Arunachal Pradesh jumped from 24 cases to 78. Mizoram climbed from 31 to 50, while Sikkim rose from 12 to 15. Nationwide, cyber crime increased by 18 percent, jumping from 86,420 cases in 2023 to 1,01,928 in 2024. This national figure has more than doubled since 2020.
Fraud drove the national spike. Fraud cases rose from 19,466 to 29,758. Cheating rose to 19,296, and computer-related offences hit 36,920. Beyond registered crimes, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal received over 65.89 lakh complaints involving Rs 55,050 crore between 2021 and 2025. Officials marked Rs 8,189 crore as lien and registered 1.95 lakh FIRs. By June 30, 2026, the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System had saved over Rs 11,158 crore across 32.80 lakh complaints.
