Kohima: The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) wants the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) to stop handing out temporary sales permits to outside businesses. Local merchants say these pop-up shops hurt permanent stores that pay rent, taxes, and employee salaries all year long. The MCCI issued a formal representation following an executive meeting on September 5.
Mokokchung has a small market. Consumer cash is limited. Temporary events drain local revenue while permanent shops carry the burden of fixed costs like electricity and sanitation fees. The chamber specifically flagged the Bombay Make Up Bazar. This business ran from August 18 to 28 under an MMC special permit. It then received an extension through September 5.
The MCCI claims this operation had a significant adverse impact on local sellers. They argue that the MMC should not favor quick permit fees over the health of established businesses. The chamber is not against competition. They want a level playing field. MCCI stated its concern is to ensure a “level playing field” and the long-term sustainability of Mokokchung's commercial sector.
The group wants the MMC to adopt a new, transparent policy for special permits. They demand a seat at the table. Consultation must happen before the council approves any new short-term activity. Permits should remain rare. The MCCI expects the city to consider these requests to protect the local economy from outside intrusion.
