Guwahati: A new acoustic study reveals why Zubeen Garg’s song Mayabini Ratir Bukut sounds so distinct. Researchers published their findings in the Journal of Voice on August 17, 2026. The paper, titled "Formant and Source-Filter Coordination in a Culturally Iconic Vocal Performance: Mayabini Ratir Bukut," offers a scientific look at his technique.
Kishore Dutta of Handique Girls’ College in Guwahati led the research. He compared the track against 11 other songs from five major artists. The list includes Bhupen Hazarika, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and KK. Garg did not rely on extreme pitch or high volume. He used surgical control instead.
The study highlights a steady link between the fundamental frequency and the first formant, a primary vocal tract resonance. Garg also used formant tuning, a trick common in opera but rare in pop music. He aligned vocal resonances with upper harmonics to shape the sound. The singer avoided spiking his volume or pitch to reach high intensity. He layered acoustic elements together over time.
"The study does not attempt to explain why the song has had such a strong emotional or cultural resonance among listeners," the author noted. The research suggests future studies should blend phonetics, musicology, and linguistics to track pop singing. The data proves that Garg’s hit stands out because of his timing and precise vocal coordination, not because of unusual acoustics.
