Imphal: Armed miscreants torched a primary school in Kangpokpi district early Monday. The blaze leveled the Lhunjang Primary School after a sharp gunfight. It started around 5 am in Lhunjang village. Security forces, including the Manipur Rifles and the India Reserve Battalion, held their ground. They traded gunfire with the attackers for nearly 30 minutes.
No one got hurt. The attackers retreated into the shadows after the shooting stopped. Police reported the building was completely gutted as the group fled the scene. Lhunjang holds roughly 40 residents. It sits 12 kilometres away from the Chalwa Police Station.
Authorities have not identified the gunmen. Police stated, "An investigation into the incident is underway." The destruction of the school brings more focus to the toll that the long-running Manipur conflict takes on local infrastructure. Officials continue to comb the area for clues regarding the attackers.
