Imphal: The United Naga Council (UNC) wants the Ministry of Home Affairs to scrap the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki militant groups. The group submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah via the Senapati Deputy Commissioner on July 22. They demand a complete overhaul of security along the Kamjong sector of the Indo-Myanmar border.
Border defenses failed twice in two months. On May 7, militants from the Kuki National Army-Burma burned Naga villages at Z Choro, Namlee-Wanglee, and Kaka. On July 1, Kuki militants and KNA-B cadres launched coordinated strikes on Huimin Thana and Kherongram. The UNC claims isolated defensive measures are not enough to stop these incursions.
Tensions remain high over the abduction of 18 Naga civilians from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13. The UNC blames the Kuki National Front-President, a group under the United People’s Front that currently holds a peace agreement with the state. On June 10, searchers recovered the bodies of six kidnapped Nagas who were murdered in captivity. The organisation stated, "The UNC alleged that cadres operating under the SoO arrangement had been able to commit serious offences with impunity because of shortcomings in the existing security framework." They now insist the Centre must act to end these violent breaches of the peace pact.
