Imphal: Shija Hospital and the Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch, hosted a joint event today at the JS Auditorium in the hospital's Itocha Block. They gathered for World Suicide Prevention Day under the theme, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide: Start the Conversation."
Ningthoujam Geoffrey, Commissioner of Education, attended as the chief guest. He pushed for a unified approach to ending the crisis. Human life remains fragile despite our modern technology. Geoffrey urged people to find support when things get tough, noting that "life is meant to be lived and not ended."
The event demanded better recognition of warning signs and behavioral shifts. Families and friends must provide help long before a situation spirals. Prof. Koijam Shantibala, Head of Psychiatry at Shija Academy of Health Sciences and President of IPS-Manipur, presided over the session.
Pradip Phanjoubam, editor of Imphal Review of Arts and Politics, joined as a guest of honor alongside SAHS Director Dr. Amuba Maisnam and Shija Hospital Chairman Dr. Palin Khundongbam. Dr. Nelson Loitongbam, Secretary of IPS-Manipur and assistant professor at JNIMS, served as the guest speaker. Attendees finished the day with an essay competition, an award ceremony, and a formal pledge to prevent suicide.
