Shija Hospitals Marks World Alzheimer’s Day With Focus on Prevention

Imphal: Shija Hospitals and SAHS joined the Indian Psychiatric Society, Manipur State Branch, to observe World Alzheimer’s Day in Imphal. The event took place at Auditorium-1, drawing a crowd of experts and advocates. Dr. Rajkumari Nayansana Devi, former Chairperson of the Manipur State Social Welfare Board, served as chief guest.

Prof. Koijam Shantibala Devi chaired the function, joined by special guests Dr. Palin Khundomgbam and Prof. Mayengbam Akshaykumar Singh. The hospital distributed vitamins and gifts to elderly residents from Langol Old Age Home and other facilities. Organizers emphasized the theme, "The Earlier You Know, The More You Can Do."

Prof. Shantibala Devi urged families to watch their elders closely as cases rise. She insisted that the condition is manageable with the right approach. Dr. Nayansana Devi credited consistent awareness efforts dating back to 2010 for improved community outcomes. She called mental health support a collective duty for all citizens.

Prof. Singh warned that the disease does not just strike the elderly, as younger individuals remain vulnerable. Dr. Palin Khundomgbam cited data showing that nearly 40 per cent of cases remain preventable. He pushed for regular yoga, daily exercise, and meditation to cut individual risk.
