Imphal: Dengue has killed two people in Churachandpur this week. Infections in the district now total 752. This marks a sharp climb from the 332 cases reported by this time last year.
A 13-year-old student from Valveng, New Lamka, died on August 22. The boy developed a high fever while heading to school. He reached Churachandpur District Hospital but died before doctors could treat him. His family buried him today at the New Lamka Cemetery.
A woman named Lily Lhingboiniang died Monday in the hospital intensive care unit. She had been diagnosed with both dengue and typhoid. Her remains are at the district hospital awaiting funeral rites. She was the second victim in under three days.
The Malaria Department launched thermal fogging in Valveng to kill mosquitoes. Officials warned the public to stop water from pooling around homes and to use mosquito nets. They stated that "containing the further spread of the dengue virus would require a collective effort."
Dengue symptoms hit four to 10 days after a bite. Patients typically suffer from sudden high fever, severe headaches, and intense muscle or joint pain. Others may experience nausea, vomiting, swollen glands, and skin rashes.

Churachandpur Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar convened an emergency meeting on August 25 to confront the rising tide of dengue, typhoid, and flu-like illnesses. The briefing at the Mini Secretariat in Tuibong also addressed an uptick in Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease affecting children aged five and under. Health officials report this illness triggers fever, rashes, blisters, and inflammation, though no deaths have been linked to it so far.
To combat the mosquito-borne threat, officials ordered the destruction of breeding sites within 100 meters of all homes. The administration also directed the Chief Medical Officer and the Zonal Education Officer to push awareness campaigns into schools, colleges, and rural villages. Hospital staff have been told to set up a dedicated help desk and launch a public helpline to better manage the influx of patients.

The Churachandpur District Private Schools and Colleges Association ordered private schools and colleges to suspend classes from August 26 to 30. Officials hope the five-day shutdown will curb the transmission of dengue, typhoid, and HFMD among students and staff. Schools choosing to stay open must enforce physical distancing, ban large gatherings, and deep-clean their facilities.
Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar toured the District Hospital late Monday to inspect the wards and blood bank. He ordered the establishment of a dedicated medical expert cell to track the surge. Beyond the Mini Secretariat staff, key attendees at the emergency briefing included ADC Lalrobul Fimate and Zonal Education Officer Esther Chingneikim, who are coordinating the school-based awareness push.
