Imphal: AICC General Secretary Bhupesh Baghel claims a secret deal exists between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal. Baghel dropped the allegation while visiting Nagaon on September 21. He pointed to the local electoral contest as proof of this cooperation. During his visit, Baghel stated, "Right now, elections are underway here in Nagaon, and the alliance between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is visible here." He offered no specific details to back the claim.
Congress leaders are gearing up for the fight. The party submitted a list of 40 star campaigners to the Election Commission on September 16. General Secretary K C Venugopal filed the document under Section 77(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Key names on the roster include Gaurav Gogoi, Rakibul Hussain, Pawan Khera, Supriya Shrinate, and Kanhaiya Kumar. Uday Bhanu Chib, Debabrata Saikia, Ripun Bora, and Paban Singh Ghatowar also made the cut. Additional campaigners include Alka Lamba, Imran Pratapgarhi, Srinivas BV, and Sudip Roy Barman.
Voters head to the polls on October 6. Officials plan to count the ballots on October 9.
