Guwahati: Assam Leader of Opposition Wazed Ali Choudhury officially declared the All India United Democratic Front irrelevant for the pending Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election. He spoke in Guwahati on August 29. The contest pits major political forces against each other. The Congress party holds five candidate applications for the ticket, though the high command retains the power to make the final choice.
Choudhury did not mince words regarding his political rivals. He accused the AIUDF and the BJP of operating as mirror images of each other. "The AIUDF is not a factor in this election. The AIUDF exists because of the BJP. Once the AIUDF is finished, the BJP will also be finished. Both are communal parties. If one shuts down, the other will too," he stated.
The Nagaon seat sits empty because former MP Pradyut Bordoloi moved to the Assam Assembly. The Election Commission still needs to post the official election schedule. Meanwhile, rumors regarding Congress MLA and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia jumping ship were swatted away. Choudhury confirmed Saikia is staying with the Congress.

Congress is cranking up its field operations. Party MP Gaurav Gogoi rallied a crowd of over 5,000 workers at a massive meeting in Juria on August 30. Gogoi declared a party win guaranteed, using the stage to slam the BJP for ignoring the poor and to accuse the AIUDF of exploiting common people to protect their own business interests.
Gogoi also dragged the government over the coals regarding corruption and alleged scams involving flood relief supplies. He pushed his party's history, pointing to the 15-year tenure of his father, the late Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, as the standard for public service. The Juria event featured a high-profile turnout including former MLAs Sibamoni Bora and Durlav Chamua along with MLA Nurul Huda.
