Imphal: Manipur faces a shrinking indigenous population. MLA Dr. Sapam Ranjan says the state must prioritize healthy lifestyles and discipline to reverse this trend. Poor eating habits and modern sedentary patterns create long-term demographic risks. The MLA spoke at the 54th Foundation Day celebration of the Nambol Mongjing Leikai Students Union-cum-Library in Mongjing, Nambol.
Dr. Ranjan pointed to a growing dependence on screens. He warned that excessive social media use acts as a digital pandemic. This behavior damages the mental and physical health of children. He stated, "Manipur cannot survive without its people." Protecting the environment is futile if the population continues to drop.
The event highlighted the need for better social structures for young people. Education and mutual support remain top priorities. Union president Pukhrambam Ibotombi noted the current crisis in Manipur. He urged local clubs to drive welfare and skill development for the next generation. Local leaders must represent the community on the global stage, he added.
The ceremony included Nambol MLA Th. Basantakumar’s PRO Nongthombam Chingkhei and Nambol Police Station ASI Ksh. Madhop. Nambol Municipal Council Ward No. 1 Councillor Pukhrambam Aruna and Mongjing LP School headmistress Yumnam Ranjana also attended. Officials handed out cash awards and citations to students who shined in annual sports and Class X and XII exams.
