Imphal: Nearly 1,800 people crowded into Nambol on September 19 to mark the first anniversary of a deadly ambush. Locals and community leaders honored two soldiers from the 33 Assam Rifles killed exactly one year prior. The group paid tribute to Naib Subedar Shyam Gurung and Rifleman Ranjeet Singh Kashyap.
The soldiers died on September 19, 2025, when gunmen struck their convoy at Nambol Sabal Leikai in Bishnupur district. The troops were heading home after finishing flood-relief duties in the Imphal Valley. Five other soldiers sustained injuries during the firefight. A press release stated the men died while serving the public.
The memorial service drew youth and community representatives together. They remembered the fallen men's dedication. Attendees used the event to advocate for regional stability, echoing calls for "peace, harmony and peaceful coexistence in the state." The gathering ended with a final, collective salute to the sacrifice of the two soldiers.
