Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met at the Secretariat on Thursday to tackle chronic flooding in Imphal. Attendees included Langthabal MLA Karam Shyam, the Secretary of Water Resources, the Imphal West Deputy Commissioner, and top engineers from the PWD and Water Resources Department. The state is finally taking action. For five to six months, low-lying parts of the city have sat underwater.
Clogged drains remain the primary culprit. Water backs up even when the weather stays dry, creating pools of stagnant, pungent waste. Near Irawat Bhawan and the Khwairamband Keithel commercial district, the mess has triggered daily transit headaches. Drivers hit hidden potholes while vendors watch their customer base shrink. Foul odors and health risks now plague the neighborhood.
"We reviewed the current situation and examined the causes of waterlogging affecting commuters and nearby residents," the Chief Minister said. He instructed his team to clear the blockages and prevent future disasters. Local business owners are demanding immediate dredging to stop the spread of disease and restore order to the streets.
