Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi Thursday. He demanded faster progress on National Highway 37 and National Highway 2. These routes, connecting Imphal to Silchar and Dimapur, remain choked with delays. The Chief Minister pushed for construction to wrap up during the current working season to stop commuter suffering.

Singh also requested the immediate start of the Shangshak-Tengnoupal Highway project. This road sits directly on the border between Manipur and Myanmar. He further sought formal approval for an elevated highway planned for Imphal. Gadkari stated the elevated project is currently under review by his ministry. Gadkari told the state delegation, "The infrastructure concerns raised during the meeting would be addressed and that the Centre would extend assistance to improve Manipur’s road network."

The meeting builds on recent state efforts to clear bureaucratic hurdles. The Manipur Cabinet passed measures earlier this year to fix land compensation disputes that stalled road work. Crews have now started work on NH-37 in Noney district. Officials also settled land disputes in Kangpokpi district along the Imphal-Dimapur route using a specific state package. Stakeholders are currently talking through remaining land issues along the Imphal-Ukhrul-Jessami Highway.
