New Highway Corridor to Slash Shillong-Guwahati Travel Time

Shillong: Surveyors are now on the ground mapping a new road alignment between Shillong and Guwahati. This project aims to shrink the distance between the two cities from 100 km down to 66 km. Travel times will drop. Commuters currently spend two-and-a-half hours on the road, but the new route targets a one-hour trip.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari backed a massive Rs 61,500-crore highway corridor. This network ties Siliguri in West Bengal to both Guwahati and Shillong. The project spans 630 km. It also includes an expressway linking Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to Siliguri. Officials want to bridge the gap between Uttar Pradesh and the Northeast.

The plan adds a third section connecting Shillong to Silchar. This 165-km greenfield highway replaces a 230-km slog. The government expects to issue the work order by next month. As Gadkari noted regarding the broader regional infrastructure goals, the initiative is designed to "improve road connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and the Northeast."
