Meghalaya Panel Sets Hearing for Contested Shree Cement Project

Shillong: A state-backed fact-finding committee will hold hearings on October 13 regarding the controversial Shree Cement project at Lum Syrman. The session starts at 10 am at the Circuit House in Khliehriat. Anyone who filed previous representations must show up with original documents in hand.

CVD Diengdoh, the committee chairperson and state commissioner, issued the notice. This panel formed on September 8, 2026, following an official inquiry request sent September 3. They have a mandate to investigate the facility in the East Jaintia Hills district.

The Jaiñtia National Council wants answers. Last week, the group demanded an independent probe into the site. They pushed for a review of actual deeds rather than just environmental filings. "The council urged the panel to examine original land records, transaction deeds and survey documents rather than relying solely on claims made in the project’s environmental documentation."

Pressure remains high. The council wants the committee to verify mining areas against authenticated maps and boundary coordinates. They also want depositions from local landholders, the Elaka Nongkhlieh traditional heads, community leaders, and the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board before the final report goes to the government.
