Bangladesh Accused of Harassing Hindu Activist Shampa Goswami

Shillong: Dublin-based Front Line Defenders raised the alarm on October 10 regarding the treatment of Shampa Goswami. She is a prominent Hindu human rights activist in Bangladesh. Authorities slapped her with a travel ban and opened a police investigation against her. The Ministry of Home Affairs initiated this probe.

The group claims this pressure stems from her gender and her status as a minority member. They report a wider climate of violence against Hindus. These state actions target Goswami, her family, and PRERONA. This is the women-led organization she runs in the Satkhira district. The organization describes the official state actions as a "sustained campaign of stigmatisation, harassment and administrative obstruction."

Authorities caught Goswami at the airport on August 21. She tried to fly to Bali, Indonesia. She planned to attend an international conference there. Officials stopped her from boarding. The travel restriction remains in effect today.
