Shillong: Bangladesh authorities sent three journalists to jail on Monday. The International Crimes Tribunal formally arrested former Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Dutta, Ekattor TV managing director Mozammel Babu, and chief correspondent Farzana Rupa. The trio faces charges of crimes against humanity linked to the violent July 2024 demonstrations.
Jail officials produced the suspects before the tribunal after a previous order. Prosecutor Gazi Monawar Hossain Tamim claims the three made provocative comments during a July 14, 2024 press conference. These statements allegedly fueled the Razakar remarks from then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which ignited the protests. Babu and Rupa are also tied to a separate case regarding the 2013 crackdown on a Hefazat-e-Islam rally at Shapla Chattar.
International groups are pushing back. The Committee to Protect Journalists demanded authorities drop the charges and stop criminalizing news coverage. Kunal Majumder, the group's Asia-Pacific Program Coordinator, stated, "Launching a crimes-against-humanity case against journalists Shyamal Dutta, Mozammel Babu, and Farzana Rupa for simply asking questions at a press conference is outrageous and deeply troubling."
Justice Makers Bangladesh in France labeled the move an attempt to turn editorial positions into state crimes. Founder Shahanur Islam warned the case smells of political retaliation. Critics say this misuse of the legal system threatens democratic values. The global community remains focused on the outcome as pressure mounts to release the journalists.
