Guwahati: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on October 8. He demanded a rapid start for the Shangshak-Tengnoupal highway project. The state needs better roads. Khemchand also pressed for formal sanction on an elevated highway in Imphal to cut down heavy traffic congestion in the capital city.

Gadkari confirmed that his ministry has the Imphal elevated highway project under active consideration. Khemchand pressed for the completion of work on National Highway-37 and National Highway-2 before the current working season ends. He noted that timely completion would help residents. "The ministry would extend all possible assistance to Manipur for improving road connectivity and overall development," Gadkari said following the discussion.

This push for infrastructure follows a separate meeting one day prior between Khemchand and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. During that visit, Khemchand briefed Shah on local efforts to bring peace and normalcy to the state. Shah accepted an invitation to travel to Manipur later this month.
