Agartala: Former Tripura Chief Minister and current Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb met Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on July 23. He demanded immediate fixes for crumbling national highways. The roads are a mess. Deb pointed specifically to the Agartala-Khowai-Kailashahar route and the Ranir Bazar-Hatikatar section of NH-8, where deep potholes and mud have made travel a nightmare for traders and commuters.
Deb also flagged the poor state of NH-208, covering the Kumarghat-Kailashahar and Kailashahar-Khowai segments, and NH-108B. He urged officials to clear out the mud and lay stone metalling on a war footing to keep traffic moving. Beyond immediate repairs, he pressed for faster work on 13 major projects currently stalled under the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
The meeting also addressed three new ropeway projects intended to boost tourism. These include links from Maharani to Chabimura, Udaipur Railway Station to the Tripurasundari Temple, and from the temple to Chabimura. Officials confirmed that tenders are already out for the fresh Detailed Project Reports. Gadkari told the managing director of NHIDCL to get the repairs done and keep a closer eye on project timelines.
Deb thanked the Minister for his help. He stated, "This is a positive step that will directly benefit the people of Tripura and improve the state's infrastructure framework." Whether the work actually speeds up remains the big question for locals.
