Kohima: Longleng officials hiked commercial taxi fares and opened alternate travel routes after landslides and mudslides crippled regional road connectivity on July 19 and 20. The District Disaster Management Authority met at the DPDB hall on July 27 to assess the destruction. Advisor A. Pongshi Phom and MLA B. Bangtick Phom attended the emergency session.
Pongshi called the disaster, which hit the entire Phom area, deeply unfortunate. He said, "No loss of life or major property damage was reported." The administration thanked the Phom Peoples’ Council, churches, student groups, and civil societies for their help during the crisis. Officials will now distribute rations and basic amenities fairly.
Drivers and commuters must now use the Longleng-Tuensang-Chare-Mokokchung route to reach Kohima or Dimapur. Travelers face strict luggage limits of 5 kg per person due to the rugged terrain. New temporary fares are set at Rs 1,600 for Dimapur, Rs 1,500 for Kohima, and Rs 600 for Tuensang.
The administration also opened a 105 km road for light motor vehicles connecting Longleng to Mokokchung via Auching, Shangjen, Momching, Phampak, Yangpi, Noksen, and Longmisa. Drivers must watch for flash floods and debris. Residents needing help should contact local Village Council Chairmen or head gaon buras.
Deputy Commissioner W. Manpai Phom confirmed that all road profiles and damage data are ready for the Chief Secretary. Authorities urged citizens not to abuse free government transport, as priority goes to students and the sick. The district will return to standard routes and fares once main roads are safe.
