Nagaland Trails Nation in Electric Vehicle Adoption

Kohima: Nagaland sits at the bottom of the national electric vehicle race. The state scored a dismal 14 out of 100 in the India Electric Mobility Index 2025. It ranks 35th out of 36 states and union territories. It is dead last among the 12 hilly and northeastern states.

NITI Aayog and the World Resources Institute India developed the index. They measured progress across 16 indicators covering transport, infrastructure, and innovation. Nagaland failed to score in EV research and innovation. Its transport electrification score hit a meager 4. The state lacked an official EV policy through December 2025.

Charging infrastructure remains a weak point. The score there dropped by 20 points to 39. Despite high power availability, capital subsidies and building bye-laws for EVs scored zero. The report noted the state needs a plan. It recommended the government "frame and notify an EV policy to enable comprehensive and integrated approach to e-mobility."

Official numbers confirm the stagnation. Data from the VAHAN Dashboard shows only 128 electric vehicles registered out of 512,434 total vehicles as of September 27, 2026. This represents just 0.025 percent of the state's fleet. While the state saw its first air-conditioned electric vehicle arrive in Dimapur last September, broader adoption is non-existent.

Nationally, Delhi leads the pack with a score of 84. Maharashtra and Karnataka followed closely behind. Nagaland remains trapped in the aspirant category, far below the national median of 40.
