Imphal: A Joint Action Committee has shut down the Imphal-Yairipok road. The 72-hour blockade began at midnight Thursday and runs until midnight July 27. Locals forced the closure to demand arrests for the murder of 55-year-old Ngangkham Thambou.
The violence erupted at 2:30 am on Sunday at the victim's home in Keirao Wangkhem Mamang Leikai. Two unidentified attackers broke inside. They shot Thambou dead as he tried to protect his children. The gunmen also struck his 52-year-old wife, Ngangkham Keinatombi, with a sharp weapon. She remains under care at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital.
Irilbung Police registered a case and detained one person connected to the assault on the wife. However, the main murder suspects are still free. JAC Convenor Phijam Brojen stated, "The blockade will begin at midnight today and will continue until midnight on July 27."
The committee is refusing to claim Thambou's body from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary. They insist the post-mortem be delayed until police catch everyone involved. Essential services like healthcare, media, religious activities, and emergency transport are exempt from the blockade. Organizers are now leaning on the Chief Minister, the Home Minister, and the local MLA to speed up the hunt for the killers.
