Imphal: A local action committee shuttered the Imphal-Yairipok road. The blockade started at midnight. It runs through midnight on July 27. The Joint Action Committee organized the protest to demand arrests for the killing of Ngangkham Thambou of Keirao Wangkhem Mamang Leikai.
Protesters want every person involved behind bars. JAC Convenor Phijam Brojen stated, "The blockade will begin at midnight today and will continue until midnight on July 27." He noted that emergency services, media outlets, medical care, and religious events remain exempt from the shutdown.
The JAC claims authorities ignored multiple requests to catch those responsible for Thambou’s death and the brutal attack on his companion. Local residents joined the effort to pressure the government. Irilbung Police currently have one suspect in custody for the assault on Thambou’s companion. That victim currently receives care at RIMS Hospital. Police haven't released any other details on the arrest.
The committee alleges that investigators pushed back the post-mortem exam for Thambou. They claim officials are waiting for more arrests before finishing the process. The group is now calling on the Chief Minister, the Home Minister, and the local MLA to fast-track the investigation and hold the killers accountable.
