Election Squad Seizes 1 Lakh in Cash During Nagaon Bypoll Check

Guwahati: Flying Squad Team members intercepted 1 lakh rupees in cash during a vehicle stop in Raha on Thursday, September 17. The team flagged down an Alto, registration AS 02 AY 3621, at Purana Chariali while running routine checks for the upcoming Nagaon by-election.

Officers identified the driver as Anarul Islam, a resident of Chengajan. They found the stack of bills inside his vehicle during the inspection. Islam claimed he needed the money to pay for goods from a hardware shop, citing a September 16 withdrawal receipt as proof.

Election rules strictly limit cash movement during the campaign period. Carrying more than 50,000 rupees triggers mandatory verification. A team member explained the legal requirements for the stop. "Since the amount was above Rs 50,000, we seized the cash as per the rules," the official said.

The squad processed the required paperwork on the scene. They released Islam shortly after finishing the formalities. Authorities continue to monitor traffic and cash flow across the district to ensure compliance with election standards.
