East Khasi Hills Police Probe Viral Deepfake Targeting SP and Deputy CM

Shillong: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed a probe into a deepfake video circulating on social media. The clip incorrectly links the police official with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong. Police will review the footage to determine if legal action is necessary.

Syiem highlighted how artificial intelligence now fuels a surge in fabricated memes and videos. He noted that the police force must verify authenticity before making official moves. Syiem said, "A decision regarding legal action would be taken after the content is reviewed."

The fake clip surfaced during a period of heightened scrutiny surrounding police conduct in the state. Syiem clarified the video contains no official police input or authorization. Investigators plan to analyze the implications of the file as they track its origins.
