New Shillong PWD Office Opens Five Months Early

Shillong: Shillong’s new Public Works Department office at Madanrting opened Monday. Construction finished five months ahead of the January 2027 deadline. Local contractors Ibapynhun Kharmih and Kitbok Warbah built the multi-storey facility for Rs 21.54 crore. Work started just last year.

The complex will host the PWD Bypass Division, the Building sub-division, and the Mechanical Division. It also replaces various rented offices. Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong praised the team during the ceremony. He told the crowd: "Their achievement should serve as an example to other contractors."

The PWD Central Division, currently at Brightwell Bungalow opposite Shillong Civil Hospital, will relocate here as well. The state will give the old bungalow site to the Urban Affairs Department for beautification. Tynsong expects the consolidation to streamline operations and upgrade conditions for staff. Senior officials from the Roads and Buildings wings attended the launch.
