Shillong: The Meghalaya government ordered all Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police to ramp up enforcement against reckless driving. The mandate follows a wave of road accidents across the state. Home Minister Prestone Tynsong announced the directive Wednesday. He says stopping these wrecks is a daily job for district officials.
Multiple accidents occurred this week. A Bolero pick-up rammed into several vehicles Tuesday morning at Mawlai Iewrynghep in Shillong. The crash left three people hurt, including a three-year-old child. Investigators suspect the vehicle suffered brake failure. Also on Tuesday, a clinker truck crashed into a gas pump at a station at 17th Mile in Ri-Bhoi district. The driver sustained injuries in the collision.
Police are still investigating a separate incident on Golf Link Road in Shillong. Officers found an 18-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl covered in blood after a scooter accident. "Preventing such accidents is part of the day-to-day responsibilities of the district administration," Tynsong said. The state government expects stricter monitoring from local authorities to curb the dangerous trend.
