Bangladeshi Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Tripura Narcotics Case

Agartala: A special court in Sonamura sentenced Bangladeshi national Md Mujahid Miah to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment for narcotics trafficking. The 26-year-old resident of Habiganj district faced the judge on September 19 following his arrest earlier this year.

Border Security Force troops intercepted Miah at 4:10 pm on March 4, 2025. He was trying to cross the international boundary near Border Pillar No. 2081/2-S. Soldiers detained him at the N.C. Nagar Border Outpost. They found him with 12 kg of ganja, 25 bottles of Phensedyl, and 28,500 Bangladeshi Taka. Police from Sonamura Station took custody of the drugs and cash.

Sub-Inspector Jagabandhu Debnath filed the chargesheet on August 29, 2025. The court handed down multiple sentences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Miah received seven years for one count and 12 years for another, alongside fines totaling Rs 130,000. He faces additional jail time if he fails to pay. The judge noted the case details centered on the "alleged illegal entry of the Bangladeshi national into India and the subsequent recovery of narcotic substances from his possession."
