Agartala: Tripura drew nearly 400,000 visitors during the first half of 2026. Union Tourism and Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat reported the data to the Lok Sabha on Monday. The state hosted 393,877 total guests between January and June. Domestic travelers accounted for 384,453 of these visits, while 9,424 international tourists arrived during the same period.
Agartala serves as the primary hub for those visiting regional landmarks. Travelers frequently move from the capital to the temples of Udaipur, the Neermahal water palace, and the wildlife sanctuary in Sepahijala. Others head to the Unakoti rock carvings or the scenic banks of Chabimura. Government officials claim these numbers prove the state is becoming a premier destination. The Centre is pushing the North-East through exhibitions, social media, and digital outreach.
The government poured funds into local culture during the 2025-26 fiscal year. Authorities released Rs 80 lakh to bolster specific events. This included Rs 30 lakh for Neermahal and Diwali festivals, plus Rs 20 lakh each for Chabimura and Tirthamukh. Officials say these events are successful because they are "blending heritage with local traditions."
Infrastructure remains a top priority. Programs like Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, SASCI, and Challenge Based Destination Development support these efforts. Regional flight routes like Agartala to Aizawl now make travel much easier under the RCS-UDAN scheme. The state also emphasizes sustainability through the Swachhata Action Plan and Swachhata Hi Seva. Since 2013, the annual International Tourism Mart has promoted regional growth, with the latest gathering held in Gangtok in November 2025.
