Guwahati: Assam drew more than six crore tourists over the last decade. State Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog confirmed the figures in the Assembly on July 14. Records show 6,04,85,638 total arrivals between the 2016-17 and 2025-26 fiscal years. This count includes 2,41,192 foreign visitors.

The industry took a massive hit during the pandemic. The 2020-21 period saw the lowest traffic with 13,52,037 arrivals, including a mere 347 foreign nationals. Travel bans stifled the sector. Then, the numbers bounced back hard.

The state recorded its busiest year in 2022-23. Statistics show 98,31,141 people visited during that stretch. That total included 18,946 foreign tourists. Neog provided the figures in response to a query from Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed.

Foreign travelers primarily arrive from the United Kingdom, France, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, the United States, Switzerland, Nepal, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, Japan, Spain, Belgium, and Israel. Law and order has improved significantly. Neog stated, "Australia, Japan and all 27 member states of the European Union have recently revised their travel advisories for Assam, citing a significant improvement in the state's law and order situation."
