Guwahati: Assam hosted more than six crore tourists over the last ten years. State Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog revealed the figures in the Assembly on July 14. Records show 6,04,85,638 total arrivals between 2016-17 and 2025-26. Foreign visitors accounted for 2,41,192 of that headcount.

The data came in response to a query from Congress MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed. Tourism crashed during the pandemic. The state hit its lowest point in 2020-21 with only 13,52,037 visitors, including a meager 347 foreign nationals. Travel restrictions choked the sector. Numbers eventually bounced back hard.

The state saw peak footfall during 2022-23. A total of 98,31,141 people visited that year, which included 18,946 foreign travelers. Neog noted that international guests primarily hailed from the United Kingdom, France, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, the United States, Switzerland, Nepal, Bangladesh, Canada, Sri Lanka, Japan, Spain, Belgium, and Israel.

Confidence in the state is growing. Australia, Japan, and all 27 member states of the European Union have recently changed their stance on regional travel. Neog stated these nations "have recently revised their travel advisories for Assam, citing a significant improvement in the state's law and order situation."
