Shillong: Cooks working for the PM POSHAN scheme in Gasuapara will launch an indefinite strike on September 1. They want more money. The local Cook-cum-Helpers unit finalized this decision on Saturday, following a statewide directive from the Union of Cook-cum-Helpers, PM POSHAN, Meghalaya.
These workers currently earn only Rs 2,000 every month. Costs are spiking. They told officials that this stagnant wage makes survival nearly impossible given the rising prices of daily goods. The group has already petitioned Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui to lobby Prime Minister Narendra Modi for better pay and service regularisation.
The workers pointed to massive regional wage gaps across India to justify their frustration. Counterparts in Puducherry bring home Rs 21,000, while workers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala earn Rs 12,000 and Rs 9,000, respectively. The unit demanded the state government prioritize them, urging officials to honor the stated goal that "Education is the first priority" by ensuring a dignified livelihood for those feeding students.
