Agartala: Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb pushed Tripura’s infrastructure needs to the forefront of the recent Parliament session. He submitted 57 questions regarding state development, with 15 accepted for official discussion. Highways are failing. Deb blamed the 2024 floods and contractor negligence for the rapid decay of critical road networks.

The MP wants a shift from bitumen to concrete construction to ensure long-term durability. He proposed the Udaipur-Amarpur stretch as a pilot project for this transition. "The initial cost may be higher, but concrete roads will serve the people for decades," he said. He argues that this approach reduces maintenance burdens over time.

Beyond roads, Deb is pushing for major tourism investment. He submitted a Rs 140 crore proposal for Majlishpur in Jirania, alongside a separate Rs 30 crore plan for Daityeshwari Kalibari, Belonia, and Jolaibari. He also demanded a comprehensive upgrade for the Unakoti heritage site. His plan goes beyond mere sculpture preservation, calling for new cafeterias, boundary walls, toilets, and better connectivity.

Deb detailed his track record on local development, noting that Rs 15.76 crore in MPLADS funds was spent during his tenure in both Houses. Furthermore, 24 people in Tripura received Rs 56.90 lakh through the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund based on his recommendations. He continues to lobby the Centre and the state government on issues including rail connectivity, fertilizer supply, natural gas, fisheries, and mineral resources. He also noted the recent passage of legislation, including amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act.
