Agartala: Tripura Lok Sabha MP Biplab Kumar Deb thanked Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat for greenlighting major restoration projects at the historic Unakoti pilgrimage site. Deb pushed for these changes in Parliament. Now, the work is finally happening.
The project focuses on preserving centuries-old rock-cut sculptures and carvings. Crews are also building a new cafeteria to boost visitor amenities. Deb believes these upgrades will cement the site as a top international destination. He stated, "the projects would strengthen the conservation of the centuries-old pilgrimage site while enhancing its appeal as a major tourist destination."
According to a July 21, 2026 letter from the Union Minister, the Archaeological Survey of India manages these monuments through its Aizawl Circle. Local teams out of Udaipur and Kailashahar oversee the daily conservation and development tasks. The current work should wrap up soon.
The Minister also flagged a past funding issue. Officials previously gave money to the Tripura government for developments outside the protected zone. The state government diverted those funds elsewhere.
