Agartala: Tripura marked National Organ Donation Day 2026 on Monday with a massive event at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala. The state started a plan to grow organ transplant services. Health Secretary Kiran Gitte led the Angdaan Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan initiative. It aims to make organ donation common in every village and household.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha missed the event due to travel but sent a message of support. Officials want the campaign to run with full energy. The state partnered with the Mohan Foundation to boost advocacy. Doctors and medical staff are getting training for complex procedures now. Teams are also traveling outside Tripura for advanced clinical instruction.
Gitte eyes expansion beyond kidneys. The state plans to perform heart and liver transplants soon. Currently, IGM Hospital operates an eye bank, but it will move to GB Hospital to better treat corneal blindness. Doctors have already performed corneal transplants. They also plan to start bone marrow transplant services at the state cancer hospital.
The health department views these moves as vital for the future. Gitte said, “Every step in organ donation and transplantation is not just about saving lives today—it is about building a healthier, more resilient Tripura for tomorrow.” This effort combines new science with public awareness to save lives.
