Agartala: Tripura kicked off a new era for state healthcare on Monday by hosting its first grand National Organ Donation Day. Officials gathered at Pragna Bhavan in Agartala to initiate a comprehensive roadmap for expanding transplant services. The event featured the campaign theme, Angdaan, Jeevan Sanjeevani Abhiyan, or Organ Donation and Life Restoring Camp.
Health Secretary Kiran Gitte led the proceedings. He emphasized the need to bring awareness to every household and village. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha missed the event due to official travel, but he instructed his administration to push the campaign with full force. Success requires local support.
Tripura has partnered with the MOHAN Foundation to train medical staff and strengthen hospital systems. Gitte confirmed that medical teams are already training abroad to handle complex procedures. The state has already performed kidney transplants. It now looks to expand into liver and heart transplantation in the coming years. Officials also plan to introduce bone marrow transplantation at the state cancer hospital.
Gitte highlighted efforts to fight corneal blindness as well. The state operates an eye bank at GB Hospital and plans to open another at IGM Hospital soon. Strengthening these services remains a priority for the health department. Gitte remarked, "Every step in organ donation and transplantation is not just about saving lives today—it is about building a healthier, more resilient Tripura for tomorrow."
